Tuning/Repair FAQs

What is involved in a tuning?

A tuning involves adjusting the tension of each string (about 230 strings in a piano) so that they are in harmony with each other and at the correct standard pitch (A440). This allows the piano to sound its best and be in tune with other instruments.

What is a ‘pitch raise’ or ‘pitch correction’?

If a piano hasn't been tuned in many years, it often drops significantly below standard pitch. A pitch raise is a preliminary, fast tuning that brings the strings slightly above their correct tension before a fine tuning is performed. This ensures the tuning remains stable.

When I contact you, what do I need to tell you about my piano and any problems with it?

It is helpful to know the brand of the piano, whether it is an upright or a grand, and roughly when it was last tuned. If you have specific issues like sticking keys, odd noises, or broken strings, please let me know so I can be prepared with the right tools and parts.

How long does it take for a tuning?

A standard tuning typically takes between 1 to 2 hours. If the piano requires a pitch raise or repairs, it may take a bit longer. I always aim to be thorough to ensure the best possible results for your piano.

What should I do before you get here?

Please clear any items (lamps, photos, metronomes) off the top of the piano so I can easily open it. Also, try to ensure a relatively quiet environment during the tuning process, as I rely on my hearing to make precise adjustments, though I will work around a noisy environment.

General Questions

What kind of piano do I have?

There are many types and sizes of pianos. To help identify yours, you can consult this guide at the Blue Book of Pianos.

How do I know when my piano needs a tuning?

Most manufacturers recommend tuning twice a year. If notes sound "sour" or if you haven't had it serviced in over a year, it is likely time for a professional tuning.

How do I know if my piano needs a repair?

If you have sticky keys, buzzing sounds, or if some notes don't play at all, your piano requires technical attention beyond a simple tuning.

How much is it going to cost to get my piano into shape?

Cost varies depending on the condition of the instrument. A standard tuning has a flat rate, but extensive repairs or pitch raises will require a personalized quote.

I’m thinking of getting a piano. Any advice?

It is always wise to have a professional technician evaluate a used piano before purchase, so contact me!
